Born in 1945, Jürg Streuli spent his formative years in his hometown of Bern, in Switzerland. In 1973, Jürg obtained a Doctorate in Political Sciences at the University of Bern. The same year he joined the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and was subsequently posted in Portugal, Angola, Switzerland, Hungary and France. In 1998, he was nominated Ambassador to Cameroon, then Singapore, Lebanon and Denmark.

 

After his return to Switzerland, Jürg worked from 2004 thru 2009 as the Swiss Ambassador for Disarmament in Geneva. In this function he headed the Swiss Delegation to the following conferences:

ñ Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (2005 New York, 2007 Vienna)

ñ Biological Weapons Convention

ñ Conference on Disarmament

ñ First Committee, UNGA, New York

ñ CCW

ñ Small Arms Process

ñ Mine Ban Treaty: Intersessionals and Meetings of the States Parties (2005, 2006, 2007)

ñ Co-chair, Victim Assistance, 2006

 

Further he was:

ñ President of the Conference on Disarmament, 2007

ñ President of the State Conference on Protocol II, of CCW, 2005

ñ Vice-President of the SALW-Review Conference, 2006

ñ Secretary General of the 2006 Meeting of the States Parties, Mine-Ban Treaty

ñ Member of the Foundation Councils and Member of the Bureaus and Treasurer of GICHD (Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining), DCAF (Geneva Centre for Democratic Control of Armed Forces) and GCSP (Geneva Centre for Security Policy)

ñ Member of the Foundation Council of the Red Cross Museum
