Laos is one of the world\'s most bomb-affected countries. Between 1964 and 1973, some 2 million tons of ordnance were dropped on the country. Many of the munitions dropped were high-explosive bomblets. The failure rate of this ammunition varies between 7 - 30%. Millions of these unexploded bombs (UXO) are still polluting wide areas of the country. The UN estimates that approximately 30% of the country\'s population has insufficient food for more than six months of each year. Chronic malnutrition is high: It is reckoned that approximately 42% of Laos children are undernourished. Food insecurity is particularly widespread in UXO-contaminated areas. FSD works to support the AUSAID Food security programme, clearing and releasing arable land to help villagers escape both food insecurity and aid dependency. [More] [Less]
