Hartmut Thoms served more than 20 years in the army of the former GDR mainly in strategic reconnaissance and during in this period served four years as Defence Attaché in Afghanistan. After his military career Hartmut worked eight years as the managing director of a commercial company specialized in technology transfer.

Hartmut organized the first UN-certified mechanical demining trial (Mozambique); introduced a mine detection dog component within the Yemen Mine Action Programme and established the Uganda Mine Action Programme. In early 2008 Hartmut Thoms joined FSD after working for more than 10 years in Programme/Project Management positions in mine action in several different countries i.e., Mozambique, Angola, Croatia (Eastern Slavonia), Yemen, Uganda, while contracted by a German commercial company and since 2000 by UNOPS.

Last but not least he is proud of his five children and currently nine grandchildren.
